Use This Advice For Better Internet Marketing | Lori Robertson's ...

If you're new here, please subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Internet marketing, done well, can bring lots of customers your way. There are lots of different ways one can interact and communicate customers today that was never possible in the past. Use this article?s advice to learn of all success you can have with Internet marketing.

Consider how important mobile marketing could be. Allow your visitors to have the opportunity to receive text alerts when special sales are available or if there is a brand new product being launched. This is the newest way to advertise and customers love it.

A comprehensive online marketing strategy should make use of social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and others. They help you keep in touch with customers and provide an easy way to advertise. Just be sure not to promote too much with tweets and comments. Make sure that you focus on quality when updating your social media outlets.

Make a game if you want to attract others to your website. People are always searching for games to play for nothing, even small ones will have people returning to you over and over. The game should be relevant to the products you sell on your website. One example would be that if you sell products for hair care, you could make a hair-inspired game that features your products.

Consider creating a public relations web page for your business as a possible internet marketing strategy. The content of the page should include information that the media would be interested in, including high-resolution product photography, press releases and even story pitches. This is the best way to get the public to see your business and it can easily be done.

Direct marketing is complementary to any Internet marketing campaign. Combine traditional advertising methods with your Internet marketing strategy. A local phone book or online directory can be an invaluable source of information as you prepare to contact customers.

When you are starting to market your business online, you should look in to advertising. Although the up-front expenses can be high, the traffic and leads that ads generate make the investment worthwhile. This helps get business with customers who wouldn?t otherwise have found your site.

Give your company?s website a URL that is simple and memorable. Try finding a domain name that lets you incorporate your business name or brand. Create an easy to remember website address so that your customers do not have to look you up in a search engine.

Be certain that the information you provide to customers when you promote your business is appropriate. Strive to make your content valuable and unique. It is important to keep your site updated so that users will always have the newest information about your business.

You should include evidence to back up anything you claim in your advertising. People are justifiably skeptical of what they read on the Internet. You will come off much more credible if you provide references, guarantees, studies and testimonials. By simply making statements without proof, people may dismiss you and your business.

You can use Internet marketing to build the largest customer base possible. It is also the key to keeping current customers happy. This customer and business interaction has never before been possible, but is now with the power of the Internet. The strategies listed here will help you become a leader in Internet marketing.

Salesforce.com Just Laid Off A Bunch Of Radian6 ... - Business Insider

Salesforce.com has laid off employees from Radian6 today.

Salesforce.com acquired Radian6 for $326 million last year.

Salesforce.com PR confirmed reports circulating on Twitter and the web of the layoffs, telling Business Insider in an emailed statement:

"With the integration of Radian6 and Buddy Media, the Salesforce Marketing Cloud is rebalancing its resources to support its growth, including moving from a hub to a distributed model for certain customer-facing roles, consolidating marketing and dramatically increasing investments in R&D. Fewer than 100 people were impacted globally."

Salesforce Marketing Cloud is the name for the new business unit created from Salesforce's recent online-marketing acquisitions.?

The news was broken by an article from Knowlton Thomas of TechVibes. Thomas?reports that Salesforce targeted Radian6's marketing and social-community departments and that even vice presidents have gotten the pink slip.

Updated: A source close to the company told us that a good number of the employees that were impacted are in Canada.

Are you an employee or Salesforce.com insider with insight to share? We want to hear it. We are discreet. jbort@businessinsider.com or on Twitter @Julie188.

Ferguson speaking up for workers as write-in congressional ...

Looking at the ballot, it would appear Republican Lynn Westmoreland is unopposed in his quest to be re-elected to Congress.

Westmoreland does, however, have an opponent, David Ferguson, who is running as a write-in candidate under the Socialist Workers Party banner. Ferguson, 57, lives in southeast Atlanta but makes regular treks to Coweta where he works at Yamaha Motor Manufacturing.

The major issue in the campaign is ?the treatment that working class people are getting,? Ferguson said. He spoke of ?the lack of jobs and low wages? as specific problems.

He said the working class is getting little attention in the current political climate. ?They?re not getting it from either the Democratic or Republican party.?

He said the needs and rights of workers are largely ignored. Companies are ?using more and more temporary workers to make even less secure jobs,? Ferguson said.

That tactic allows employers ?to employ as many workers as possible at very low wages,? the candidate stated.

Someone is needed to ?defend workers? rights to organize unions,? Ferguson said. ?I see having a revitalization of unions as vital.?

While the financial downtown of the past five years is what many people see as the time period when working Americans have been struggling, Ferguson said statistics show working people have seen a steady decline in real wages since the 1970s.

?The only way to reverse that is going to be political organizing of the working class,? he said. He said both Republicans and Democrats ?represent the rich and their interests.?

Ferguson spent a day in Newnan campaigning recently. Rachele Fruit, who is the SWP?s congressional candidate for the fourth district, joined him to canvass and meet voters.

?We went to two housing areas in Newnan,? Ferguson said. At the area off Shenandoah Boulevard, ?we went to both apartments and houses,? he said. They also visited in the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive area.

?We got a good response. People hadn?t heard of me very much,? Ferguson said.

Many of the people they met ?were glad to see somebody else running? besides the incumbent, Ferguson said. ?They hadn?t known they had a choice.?

Earlier this month, Ferguson attended a rally in Atlanta where James Harris, the SWP?s presidential candidate, spoke. Harris made a stop in Coweta County this summer.

Harris spoke about ?the many struggles that are going on around the world,? Ferguson said, explaining that workers? rights are an issue in many nations. ?We see our politics as standing for the world. The problems are worldwide, and the solutions are going to have to be on a worldwide basis.?

Ferguson grew up as part of a farm family in eastern Kentucky. Televised reports of events in the outside world ? the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights struggle ? ?got me to thinking and looking more critically at what the U.S. was doing,? he remembered.

He read widely as a youngster. Of his coming to see a different view of America, ?a lot of it was on my own,? he said.

This year is Ferguson?s first time to run for office in Georgia. He ran for city council when he lived in Seattle, Wash. ?I ran a few other times in other states,? he said.

All of his political efforts have been as a Socialist Workers Party candidate. ?I?ve been involved with the SWP since I was 20,? he said.

He read about the Young Socialists Alliance while attending the University of Kentucky. ?There was a political fight around school busing for desegregation ? both in Boston, Mass., and in Louisville, Ky.,? he said.

Ferguson was involved in the pro-busing movement and met members of the Young Socialists Alliance who ?were interested in doing the same thing.?

That connection proved transformational for Ferguson. ?After some time, I decided I had much broader agreement,? he said. ?A few years later when I went to West Virginia and worked in the coal mines ? that?s when I decided to join the party.?

Ferguson is not just a candidate speaking up for working class citizens, he is a worker himself. ?I?ve been working in factories for 30-something years now,? he said.

?I?ve gotten a lot more education outside the classroom than I ever did in it,? Ferguson reflected.

The SWP was founded in 1937 and has been running presidential candidates since the 1940s.

Afghan president asks Pakistan to fight extremism

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghan President Hamid Karzai has written letters to top political and religious leaders in Pakistan, denouncing the Taliban attack on a Pakistani teenager who is promoting girls' education and asking them to help battle extremism in both countries.

Malala Yousufzai, 14, was seriously wounded when a Taliban militant shot her in the head on Oct. 9 on her way home from school. She is widely respected for being an activist for girls' education in the Swat Valley where she lives, and the rest of Pakistan. The shooting set off an international outcry against extremists.

Karzai's office said in a statement issued late Saturday that the president wrote that the attack on Yousufzai indicated that both Afghanistan and Pakistan need to take "coordinated and serious" steps to fight terrorism and extremism. Karzai wrote that he views the shooting as an attack on Afghanistan's girls as well.

"It is a deplorable event that requires serious attention," Karzai wrote.

Those upset about the shooting should not be silenced, he wrote, and both Afghans and Pakistanis need to cooperate and fight with strong resolve against terrorism and extremism so that the "children of Afghanistan and Pakistan" can be saved from oppression.

Karzai has been pushing Islamabad to take more action against militant groups that he says hide out in Pakistan and then cross into Afghanistan to conduct attacks on Afghan officials and security forces and on international forces.

The letters were sent to more than a dozen political and religious leaders, including Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari; Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf; Nawaz Sharif, the leader of Pakistan's Muslim League Party; Qazi Hussain Ahmed, leader of the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami; Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, who heads the Pakistan Muslim League-Q; and Imran Khan, a cricket star who leads the Tehreek-e-Insaf party.

Khan has been especially outspoken against U.S. drone attacks. Khan has argued in the past that Islamabad's alliance with Washington is the main reason Pakistan is facing a homegrown Taliban insurgency and that militant activity in Pakistan's tribal areas will dissipate when U.S. troops withdraw from Afghanistan. Earlier this month, Khan led a protest against U.S. drone attacks, saying that as long as they continue, anti-American sentiment in Pakistan could continue to rise.

Roof Repair in Jacksonville, FL Company Launches Online Quote ...

Jacksonville, Florida (PRWEB) October 06, 2012

Roof repair in Jacksonville, FL company has launched a better way for homeowners and business owners to get up-to-date pricing for roofing services. The Roof Link Inc. company has redesigned its online website and has added an easy quote form. This quote form can be accessed from any Internet connected device. The information that is submitted from the quotation form is immediately routed to Roof Link contractors. This new quote system was designed to help speed up the process of quotes to allow faster roof repairs and installation services. More information can be found by visiting http://www.roofingjacksonvilleflorida.com.

The traditional way to receive roofing related work was to search a telephone directory or catch a glimpse of a commercial on local television. The rise of Internet searches for home improvement services has been verified by websites like Yelp and Angies List that help connect homeowners with pre-screened companies.

The changes to the Google search engine that have been made since 2010 have complicated the process for homeowners and business owners to find local repair companies in search results. Many of the search results that have been removed by Google were low trafficked local companies with websites that were not frequently updated.

Roof repair is one area of construction that cannot be put off in place of another project. States like Florida that have specific hurricane and tropical storm seasons often have a need for roofing companies to be on call constantly.

The Roof Link Inc. company has recently expanded its services to offer seven days a week service in and around the Jacksonville, FL area. This has helped to put Roof Link in a first place position when reports of damage are made or when an estimate for repairs is required. Roof Link contractors routinely meet with insurance adjusters to help homeowners maximize the amount of assistance that insurance companies can provide.

Roofing materials are an important component of all repairs and installation projects. There are some companies that manufacture roofing supplies that are designed for use in the Midwest or Western states. The shingles and roof coverings that are used in Florida sometimes require separate permits under the building code legislation. This is to help protect homeowners and ensure that all homes meet the minimum guidelines for wind, hail and other weather damage protection.

Roof Link Inc. now uses Owens Corning roofing materials to help offer high quality products to all homeowners and business owners. These products can have algae resistant ratings, solar resistance and wind resistance of up to 130 miles per hour. The natural life of a roof using higher quality materials like those from Owens Corning can be extended by 10 to 15 years with routine maintenance and care.

Cardioviva will help fill the gap between diet, exercise and drugs

Montral, Qubec, Oct. 11, 2012 -- Over half (52 percent) of supplement users are concerned about their heart health and 73 percent express an interest in natural, clinically proven solutions for cholesterol reduction, according to market research conducted by Micropharma Limited, a pioneer in the development of innovative and effective probiotics.

"People are looking for naturally sourced supplements that work naturally with the body's systems for balance and control," said Mitchell Jones, MD, PhD, chief scientific officer and co-founder, Micropharma. "We are launching a probiotic supplement, Cardioviva, in the coming months that will offer a safe and natural addition to a heart healthy diet and lifestyle for those consumers who want a natural solution."

Dr. Jones will present new clinical results about Cardioviva (Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242) at an oral presentation entitled "Probiotics for Heart Health: Next Generation of Adjunct Therapies for Lipid Management," at the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions on Nov. 5, 2012, in Los Angeles. The association expects more than 20,000 scientists and healthcare professionals from more than 110 countries to attend the Scientific Sessions. It is the largest gathering devoted to the science of cardiovascular disease and stroke and the care of patients suffering from these diseases. Results of the research will be available following the presentation.

Highlights from the survey, conducted among 677 supplement users in the United States in May 2012, follow:

Heart health is very important among supplement users, and they understand there is a connection between gut health and heart health.

  • Heart health is a bigger concern than digestive health. Roughly half (52 percent) are concerned about heart health relative to just over one third (40 percent) who express concern over digestive health.
  • Nearly all (91 percent) understand and believe that diet is related to heart health, agreeing that the health of their heart can be directly affected by what they eat.
  • Seventy-five percent agree that their overall health is affected by the health of their digestive system and 76 percent agree that the health of their digestive system affects the health of their heart.

Supplement users are looking specifically for a better, more holistic long-term solution to high cholesterol and promoting heart health.

  • Three-fourths (75 percent) of supplement users would prefer a more natural way to lower cholesterol.
  • Seventy-three percent wish there was a clinically proven way to reduce cholesterol that is not a prescription drug.
  • More than two-thirds (67 percent) of supplement users say they worry about the side effects of taking prescription drugs to treat cholesterol.

Probiotic supplement users understand different strains of probiotics confer different benefits and that these benefits extend beyond improved regularity.

  • Seventy-seven percent agree that probiotics deliver a dose of good bacteria to your body.
  • Sixty percent have used probiotics, either in the form of a food with active live cultures, a probiotic food, or supplement.
  • Over two thirds (69 percent) of probiotic users agree that different active cultures provide different types of health benefits, and nearly three out of four (73 percent) probiotic users agree that active cultures do more for them than improve digestion.

Emerging science is evaluating whether the microbiome, and gut bacteria specifically, can play a role in health and certain chronic diseases such as heart disease. Probiotics (live healthy bacteria that confer a health benefit to the host) are being studied to determine if they may have a role in improving specific health markers to maintain and improve health and wellness through the gut.

Mom's Consumption of Fish Tied to ADHD Risk

A study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine earlier this week found a link between the amount of mercury that a woman consumed while pregnant and the risk that her child would develop attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In general, the more mercury that a woman consumed while pregnant, the greater the risk that her child would go on to be diagnosed with ADHD.

In order to measure the women's mercury consumption, researchers took hair samples from them shortly after they had given birth. They also had them fill out a food diary to track how often they had consumed fish while still pregnant.

Here is some of the key information regarding the new study's findings on the correlation between mercury and ADHD.

* The researchers studied 788 children who were born between the years of 1993 and 1998 near New Bedford, Mass. According to Reuters, the scientists involved decided to study the correlation between mercury and ADHD because previous studies had reached conflicting conclusions, with some studies finding in favor of fish consumption while pregnant and others cautioning against it.

* This study found a correlation between women who consumed fish at least twice a week and a significantly lower risk of their having a child that was diagnosed with ADHD.

* This correlation was particularly strong among male children. Overall, women who consumed more fish appeared to reduce their risk of having a child who was diagnosed with ADHD by up to 60 percent, according to the study.

* The counterbalance to that correlation, according to a report on the study by The Telegraph, was that women who consumed higher levels of mercury, commonly found in fish, increased their risk of having a child who was diagnosed with ADHD by between 40 and 70 percent.

* Researchers believe that part of the key may be eating more fish, but making sure to eat the right kind of fish to help keep overall mercury levels lower.

* According to the Reuters report, salmon and haddock are among the fish with the lowest levels of mercury, while the so-called "big fishes" like tuna and swordfish are among those that pregnant women should probably avoid because of the their high levels of mercury.

* Currently, the U.S. government recommends that women limit their consumption of fish while they are pregnant, in order to avoid raising the level of mercury in their bodies. While the study's lead author, Sharon Sagiv, told Reuters that the new study "does call into question" those guidelines, she also reiterated that more research is needed.

Peterson set to return to scene of knee injury

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) ? The image, and the pain, is still fresh in Adrian Peterson's mind.

He remembers taking the handoff and bursting for three yards before Redskins safety DeJon Gomes collapsed Peterson's left knee on a tackle and he crumpled to the FedEx Field turf.

Even before the MRI exam, Peterson had a feeling his ACL, and his season, were gone.

"I kind of knew," Peterson said Thursday. "I felt three pops and just the way may leg bent, I knew it was messed up pretty bad."

Less than 10 months later, the Vikings are returning to the same field. And remarkably, Peterson will be right there with them ready to go at it again. The star running back was in the lineup on opening day and has been getting stronger every week to help the Vikings jump out to a surprising 4-1 start.

The next step in his impressive recovery comes Sunday, when he returns to the site of the devastating injury.

"I guess you could say that because each week I've been taking a step to improving, just feeling stronger and more explosive," said Peterson, who ranks seventh in the league with 420 yards rushing. "As a team, we're doing the same things, getting better and improving. It's going to be good for us as a team to go out and continue to move forward and take those steps."

Even though he has made it all the way back, Peterson still hasn't watched the full game tape of that day against the Redskins. And he's only seen the replay of that fateful play a handful of times, and not intentionally.

"It's not something I Googled or something," Peterson said. "I've run across it a couple times. I don't like seeing it."

By the time Peterson was on the cart and headed for the tunnel, he was already thinking about making it back in time for the next season. And the rest of the Vikings were on their way to a 3-13 finish.

Peterson's optimism was met with a skeptical eye, but the determined runner threw himself into a rehab program that allowed him to return for the 2012 opener. Glimpses of the old Peterson have steadily started to reappear over the last few weeks, including runs of 34 and 22 yards in a win over the Titans last weekend.

Even offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave admitted that he didn't think Peterson could get back to this level this soon.

"Definitely not," Musgrave said. "Just amazing. It's amazing the progress he's made and how hard he's worked."

He's taken more than three times as many carries as his backup Toby Gerhart, proving that the Vikings are no longer concerned about the effects his workload could have on his knee.

"I think everybody was just hoping that Adrian would come back," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. "Watching him on film, you can tell he's worked extremely hard to put himself in the position he's in. At least from the outside, I don't know him personally, but you can see what a great kid he is and I think everyone was pulling for him. Our players were sick when it happened."

They may be sick for another reason on Sunday.

Though Peterson has put the injury behind him and never complained about the legality of Gomes' hit, he did admit he'd be looking for a little revenge this weekend.

"Maybe a little bit," he said. "But nothing that's just overwhelming and really that personal."

In a situation eerily similar to last year, Peterson has been bothered by a sore ankle this week. Some wondered if playing through the pain last year contributed to Peterson's knee injury, but most discount the theory. Still, Peterson did not practice on Wednesday was limited on Thursday because of the discomfort, though he did say he planned on playing against the Redskins.

"I wouldn't call it a concern, but it's something I definitely want to get back to feeling good," Peterson said. "I don't think it's going to hinder me. I've been able to play and push through worse ankle injuries than the one I had, so I'm just focused on the things I can control."

After all, he may not take Gomes' hit personally, but that doesn't mean Peterson won't be looking for Gomes' No. 24 this week.

"Of course," Peterson said with a chuckle. "I'm going to make sure I have my shoulders low. He might be going for the ankles. I'm just going to go out and play ball and just have fun."

Notes: WR Percy Harvin (hamstring) was limited in practice on Thursday. Coach Leslie Frazier said Harvin started to get sore on Wednesday so they limited him as a precaution. ... WR Jerome Simpson (back) practiced on a limited basis after missing on Wednesday. Frazier said he wants to see how Simpson comes back on Friday before they decide on his availability for the game against the Redskins.

Preserving the viability of small physicians practices: Interview with ...

October 10th, 2012 by David E. Williams of the Health business blog

It?s hard for small primary care practices to keep their heads above water these days. It?s not due to a lack of patients. Instead increasing administrative complexity and the need to deploy advanced information technology are making it harder and harder to go it alone. Many physicians are giving up their private practices to become employees of larger, hospital-centric health care systems. That?s a shame for those docs who?d rather practice in a more personal environment and for patients (like me) who prefer a smaller setting for primary care.

In this podcast interview, athenahealth?s vice president for client services, Scott Andrews discusses the challenges facing primary care practices and how some practices are responding successfully.

In-flight chat: Emirates lets passengers use cell phones during flights ...

plane passengers PEDs

Dubai-based Emirates is now allowing passengers on its A380 planes to use their cell phones to make calls during flights.

There?s been a lot of talk lately about airlines finally giving the green light to passengers wishing to talk on their cell phones up in the air, though whether the majority of flyers are actually in favor of such a move isn?t certain. Being stuck beside someone on a long-haul flight jabbering away into the mouthpiece of their cell phone ? as well into your ear ? might, after all, be enough to make you want to go for a wing walk to escape the noise.

How passengers really feel, though, may be immaterial as it seems inevitable that a future of planes filled with cell phone owners bellowing into their handsets ?I?m on the plane? is just around the corner.

Dubai-based carrier Emirates is leading the charge, allowing passengers on its double-decker A380 jets to use their phones to make calls from this week. The first call was reportedly made 11,500 meters (38,000 feet) up, to a location in China. The nature of the call isn?t known, though if it?s anything like the ones you hear on trains and buses, it won?t have been anything too important.

As an AllThingsD report on the development points out, Emirates is no slacker when it comes to offering passengers options regarding in-flight tech services. In the 1990s, on-board phones and fax machines were installed in its Airbus aircraft, while email and text messaging via in-seat facilities has been offered since 2006.

?Pushing the boundaries?

In a statement about Emirates? new service, the airline?s vice president, Patrick Brannelly, said, ?Beginning in 1993 with first passenger satellite phone service to last year with our A380 Wi-Fi system, Emirates has always taken the approach that providing the latest in in-flight service and connectivity is a key part of our passengers? journey?

He added, ?Emirates continues to invest in the most innovative technology possible and promises to keep pushing the boundaries of in-flight innovation for the benefit of our passengers.?

Flyers in the US, or those traveling to and from the country, may or may not be pleased to know that a long-standing safety-related ban on the use of cell phones in aircraft imposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) means the service will be blocked when the plane is flying over the US or within 250 miles of the country.

It was reported in August that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is planning to take another look at the restrictions placed on the use of personal electronic devices (PEDs) on planes in the US, though cell phones will not be included in the review.

Internet Marketing Rules Blog: Little-Known Gems Of Internet ...

If you?re still struggling to make money on the internet with your internet business, then now is the time to re-evaluate your marketing plan. The bottom line is that you need a good offer, a good sales letter (or product description page), and alot of targeted traffic. With these 3 things intact, you can?t go wrong.

However, many online business owners go wrong. They do so because they follow the outdated and ineffective strategies of marketing, and then go out expecting to earn alot of money in the process. But it just won?t happen in this day and age. If you want to have the success that you?re looking for in your business, then you will have to change what you?re doing, and start doing things that will make your online business productive.

Even if you?re currently getting a little bit of traffic to your website, you could always run ads to boost your traffic count, but as soon as the advertising funds run out, so does your traffic. So if you?re going to do advertising, make sure you?re making money - or at least breaking even on each sale.

Also, there are times where you CAN lose money on each customer you get, and wind up extremely profitable in the years to come. If you know what the average lifetime value of a customer in your business is, then you can probably afford to go negative by a small amount on each sale, because you know you will recoup that money (and more) as you sell more and more to your backend customers.

However if you?re brand new with your internet business and you don?t have any customers yet, then you have no clue as to how much each customer will be worth to you in the long run. Because of this, you?re better off trying to make money on each sale, or at least breaking even. Don?t try to go negative on each sale because you don?t know whether or not your customers will be worth anything to you in the future.

In the world of online marketing, this has to be your thinking process. You can?t just buy a website, create a product, and start marketing. All of these things need to be taken cared of before you start doing any marketing. Create a ?marketing plan? (not a business plan) that will guide you as you market your products online.

Becoming a ?marketer? versus just being good at what you do will take your business over the top. It?s very important to be a marketer first, then be a business owner. Marketers produce sales; business owners produce products and do customer service. If you want to maximize your sales and profits, this is what you have to do.

Use today?s lesson as a guide to keep in mind as you market your online business. You don?t want to be in the 95% of new business owners who will fail this year. If you want to be amongst the top 5%, successful group? you have to be aggressive and smart with your marketing.

Good luck with using these tips to earn more money in your online business today.

US and Russian space agencies to launch first year-long mission on the ISS

US and Russian space agencies to launch first year-long mission on the ISS

If you thought that year out around Europe was an eye opener, how about 12 months on the International Space Station? That's what's in store for two unnamed astronauts. Currently, the maximum stay on the ISS is six months, but in 2015, one Russian, and one American will work their way through the whole calendar, in a trip that could help pave the way for deep space travel. Plenty of data has already been collected about the effect microgravity has on the body, but less is known of the longer-term implications. NASA is already considering sending manned expeditions to near-Earth asteroids and Mars in the coming decades -- but the results from this excursion could prove invaluable. The names of the chosen two haven't been revealed, and the Soyuz capsule's (currently unaccounted for) third-seat has also sparked talk of another person possibly coming along for the ride. Time to re-plan that gap year?

Home Improvement? Tips to Avoid Scams!

Home Improvement? Tips to Avoid Scams!

Home improvements and repairs can cost thousands of dollars and are the subject of frequent complaints. Here are some tips when selecting a contractor:

  • Get recommendations and references. Talk to friends, family and others who have used the contractor for similar work.
  • Get at least three written estimates. Insist the contractors come to your home to evaluate what needs to be done. Be sure the estimates are based on the same work so that you can make meaningful comparisons.
  • Check contractor complaint records. Your state or local consumer protection agency or Better Business Bureau can provide this information.
  • Make sure the contractor meets licensing and registration requirements. Your state or local consumer protection agency can help you find out what these requirements are.
  • Get the names of suppliers and ask if the contractor makes timely payments.
  • Contact your local building inspection department to check for permit and inspection requirements. Be wary if the contractor asks you to get the permit; it could mean the firm is not licensed.
  • Be sure your contractor is insured. They should have personal liability, property damage and worker?s compensation insurance for workers and subcontractors. Also check with your insurance company to find out if you are covered for any injury or damage that might occur.
  • Insist on a written contract that states exactly what work will be done, the quality of materials that will be used, warranties, timetables, the names of any subcontractors, the total price of the job, and the schedule of payments.
  • Try to limit your down payment. Some states have laws limiting the amount of down payment required.
  • Understand your payment options. Compare the cost of getting your own loan versus contractor financing.
  • Don?t make a final payment or sign a final release until you are satisfied with the work and know that subcontractors and suppliers have been paid. Some state laws allow unpaid subcontractors and suppliers to put a lien on your home for bills the contractor failed to pay.
  • Pay by credit card when you can. You may have the right to withhold payment to the credit card company until problems are corrected.

Be especially cautious if the contractor:

  • Comes door-to-door or seeks you out;
  • Just happens to have material left over from a recent job;
  • offers you discounts for finding other customers;
  • quotes a price that?s out of line with other estimates;
  • pressures you for an immediate decision;
  • offers an unusually long guarantee;
  • can only be reached by leaving messages with an answering service;
  • drives an unmarked van;
  • has out-of state license plates; or
  • asks you to pay for the entire job up front.

With most home improvements, federal law gives you three business days to cancel without penalty. Of course you would have to pay for any benefit you?ve already received. Your state laws may also provide some protection. And remember, if you finance home improvements with a home equity loan and don?t make your payments, you could lose your home.
