Hubble spots a supernova in NGC 5806

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2012) ? A new image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows NGC 5806, a spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo (the Virgin). It lies around 80 million light years from Earth. Also visible in this image is a supernova explosion called SN 2004dg.

The exposures that are combined into this image were carried out in early 2005 in order to help pinpoint the location of the supernova, which exploded in 2004. The afterglow from this outburst of light, caused by a giant star exploding at the end of its life, can be seen as a faint yellowish dot near the bottom of the galaxy.

NGC 5806 was chosen to be one of a number of galaxies in a study into supernovae because Hubble's archive already contained high resolution imagery of the galaxy, collected before the star had exploded. Since supernovae are both relatively rare, and impossible to predict with any accuracy, the existence of such before-and-after images is precious for astronomers who study these violent events.

Aside from the supernova, NGC 5806 is a relatively unremarkable galaxy: it is neither particularly large or small, nor especially close or distant.

The galaxy's bulge (the densest part in the center of the spiral arms) is a so-called disk-type bulge, in which the spiral structure extends right to the center of the galaxy, instead of there being a large elliptical bulge of stars present. It is also home to an active galaxy nucleus, a supermassive black hole which is pulling in large amounts of matter from its immediate surroundings. As the matter spirals around the black hole, it heats up and emits powerful radiation.

This image is produced from three exposures in visible and infrared light, observed by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.3 by 1.7 arcminutes.

A version of this image was entered into the Hubble's Hidden Treasures Image Processing Competition by contestant Andre van der Hoeven (who won second prize in the competition for his image of Messier 77). Hidden Treasures is an initiative to invite astronomy enthusiasts to search the Hubble archive for stunning images that have never been seen by the general public. The competition has now closed.

NASA sees Hurricane Isaac make double landfall in Louisiana

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Hurricane Isaac is continuing to drop heavy rainfall over Louisiana and Mississippi, and NASA's TRMM satellite identified that rainfall as the storm was making landfall.

On Aug. 29, 2012 at 1 p.m. EDT, Isaac was still a hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 75 mph (120 kmh). Isaac was located about 10 miles northwest (15 km) of Houma, Louisiana and moving slowly. It is moving to the northwest near 6 mph (9 km). Isaac continued bringing heavy rainfall to southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi. The threat for dangerous coastal storm surge and inland flooding are expected to continue overnight.

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite flew over Hurricane Isaac twice on the night that Isaac made landfall in Louisiana and headed for New Orleans. TRMM is a joint mission managed by both NASA and JAXA, the Japanese Space Agency.

In the first of the two overflights, the TRMM radar saw two hot towers in the eyewall of Hurricane Isaac just hours before landfall. While hot towers were shooting up in the eyewall over the ocean, Isaac's inner rainband was already lashing Louisiana with heavy rain. Hot towers are common in intensifying tropical cyclones are are a sign that energy is being pumped into the hurricane from the ocean's surface. A "hot tower" is a tall cumulonimbus cloud that reaches at least to the top of the troposphere, the lowest layer of the atmosphere. It extends approximately nine miles (14.5 km) high in the tropics.

Two images were created by Owen Kelley, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The background of the first image showed TRMM infrared observations that give a sense of the height of the cloud cover the hides the heavy precipitation inside of of the hurricane. The blue-gray 3D volume contains the light precipitation inside the hurricane, using a 20 dBZ radar-reflectivity threshold.

In the image, an insert reveals details at the center of the hurricane. Two hot towers are indicated by the yellow and orange colors. They are locations where strong updrafts are lifting frozen precipitation above a 14.5 km (9.1 mile) threshold. Water that condenses in updrafts will soon freeze if updrafts lift it above the zero-degree isotherm near 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) altitude. The freezing releases another boost of latent heat, the fuel of hurricanes, following the initial release of latent heat when the water vapor condenses into liquid.

The TRMM radar happened to overfly Hurricane Isaac again just five hours later, shortly after the eyewall made landfall. Robbed of its oceanic source of energy, the eyewall hot towers are gone in this later overflight. Instead of reaching 14.5 km (9.1 mile) altitude, the eyewall merely reaches a 10 km (6.2 mile) altitude, which is indicated by the light green shading at the top of the blue-green volume of light precipitation.

Unfortunately for New Orleans and surrounding areas, TRMM sees that Hurricane Isaac's eyewall was remarkably well organized at that time, despite having made landfall. The insert shows a ring of very intense radar echos in red, echos that exceed 40 dBZ radar reflectivity. The northwest quadrant of his ring of heavy precipitation is almost on top of New Orleans at the time of observation.

'Superhuman' Paralympians burst onto world stage

By Jamieson Lesko, NBC News

LONDON -- A battlefield explosion sends troops flying, a speeding car flips over on a highway, a?"Murderball" player is knocked right out of his wheelchair, all set to?a?fierce Public Enemy soundtrack.?

"Forget everything you thought you knew about strength. Forget everything you thought you knew about humans. It's time to do battle. Meet the Superhumans."

That?s how British TV viewers are being introduced to this year?s Paralympic athletes by Channel 4, which is broadcasting the London 2012 Games. Its campaign is giving Superbowl ads a run for their money, going viral?with more than 500,000 views on YouTube alone.

The hard-hitting ad is designed to jolt the public into a state of awareness and awe of what many of?these disabled athletes have had to deal with just to stay alive, let alone compete at an elite level.?It highlights that the competitors have overcome disabilities and disasters most of us cannot begin to imagine or will ever have to face. And that was before they became world-class competitors.

Retired U.S. Marine Angela Madsen once lived out of a locker at Disneyland. But the 52-year-old paraplegic turned her life around and has rowed across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. She's now competing for Team USA at the Paralympic Games in London. Madsen told her story to NBC's Jamieson Lesko.

More coverage of the London Paralympics from Britain's ITV News

The campaign also aims to combat?the impression that the Paralympics is essentially the "Olympics-lite." Among the sports the ad focuses on is wheelchair rugby -- which?is so violent that it's?been dubbed "Murderball." The sheer amount of full-force contact between players requires welders to be put on standby on the sideline to repair damaged wheelchairs.

Some of the hottest tickets at the London Paralympics are for wheelchair rugby. The sport is so violent and fierce, that it has been dubbed "Murderball". ITN's Lewis Vaughan Jones met Team Great Britain's inspirational captain.

The International Wheelchair Rugby Federation?has championed the "Meet the Superhumans" campaign and comments posted on its Vimeo page illustrate the ad's power. "Now that's what I'm talking about, 'Thank you for letting me be myself.' Public Enemy never sounded better," one fan wrote. "It's a great soundtrack for our ... lives whether we're Olympians or not."

Channel 4

This ad campaign for Channel 4's Paralympic coverage has captured the imagination of many people in Britain.

The event was founded 1948 to help rehabilitate injured British veterans returning from the Second World War, though many Americans remain unaware that it exists. (There's also a tendency to confuse it with?the Special Olympics, which is unrelated. Paralympic athletes compete despite impairments including amputations, blindness, cerebral palsy and mobility disabilities.) However, there are signs that 2012 will be its breakout year.

London-bound veterans push Paralympics back to battlefield roots

The success of the London 2012 Olympic Games has sparked a spike in public interest in Britain. Ticket sales have wildly exceeded expectations, with organizers saying 2.3 million tickets have already been sold, which is more than any other Paralympic Games in history. There's a high demand for the 200,000 remaining tickets, which will be made available in batches online.

Soccer superstar David Beckham is serving as an ambassador to the Games and Prince William and Kate Middleton are expected to attend Wednesday night's Opening Ceremony.

Ahead of the London Paralympics, L.A. Galaxy midfielder David Beckham spent a day learning blind football from Team Great Britain.

Team USA features 20 military veterans and active duty service members, including some wounded at war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Among them is U.S. Army 82nd Airborne paratrooper Centra "Ce-Ce" Mazyck, who was paralyzed when her parachute got tangled with another in 2003. Doctors said she'd never walk again but Maczyk refused to listen. And she has proved them wrong.

"I wasn't hearing it. In my heart, in my soul, I knew I could walk," Mazyck told NBC News. "To this day, I am walking."

Centra "Ce-Ce" Mazyck, who was paralyzed during a parachute jump with the 82 Airborne in November 2003, will compete in the javelin at the London Paralympics. "This is my second chance," she tells NBC News' Jamieson Lesko.

The South Carolina-based mother of one is now engaged to be married but admits shes also deeply "in love" with her javelin.

'Very fortunate'
U.S. Navy Lt. Bradley Snyder was blinded by a bomb while rushing to the aid of two fellow soldiers in Afghanistan.

His training regimen had him swimming 4,000 yards a day at his local?pool in Baltimore. He is due to compete on the one-year anniversary of his injury.?

Lt. Brad Snyder lost his sight in an IED explosion in Afghanistan last year. The Navy officer will once again represent the U.S., this time at the London 2012 Paralympics in September.

"I knew I was very fortunate to be in that hospital bed and not in a coffin in the ground,"?Snyder said. "I'm going to show people that I'm not going to let this beat me. I'm not going to let blindness build a brick wall around me. I am going to find a way forward."

From darkness to gold: Blinded Navy swimmer set to race at Paralympics

South African double amputee and sprinter Oscar Pistorius, who has been nicknamed the "Blade Runner," will compete in the Paralympics after making history by running?in the 400-meter event at the Olympics.

Pistorius is likely to face tough competition from Team USA, including a 25-year-old rocket scientist Jerome Singleton?and the 22-year-old Blake Leeper.

Pistorius, a double amputee born without fibulas in his legs, has trained hard to participate in the Olympics despite having to wear prosthetic legs. NBC's Mary Carillo reports.

Pistorius, a four-time Paralympic gold medealist, will carry the flag for South Africa at Wednesday's Opening Ceremony. Coldplay will perform at the Closing Ceremony on September 9.

"I believe these Games are going to change peoples' mindsets about disabilities," Pistorius told Reuters. "In the last two to three years I've seen a shift. For many years people have shunned disability, but I don't have anything in life I'm not able to do. I don't think of my disability, I think of my ability."

Sixteen countries are competing for the first time. Among them, Haiti will make its debut with two athletes competing in track and field.

This is the story of two paralympians from Haiti - a nation which is competing in the games for the first time. It's a country where disability is stigmatized and those who are disabled are shunned. ITV's Lewis Vaughan Jones reports on two pioneers who want to overcome prejudice and fill their nation with pride.

British broadcaster Channel 4 will show 150 hours of programming and about 350 hours more online and across three temporary on-demand channel.

The International Paralympic Committee predicts that, adding together viewers on each of the 11 days of competition, the total audience figure for the London Paralympics will reach 4 billion.

Of all the events that will be showcased in the Paralympics, few are as intriguing as blind soccer. ITN's Lewis Vaughan Jones met Team Great Britain captain David Clarke who explained how it works.

It said that four years ago in Beijing, a total overall audience of around 3.8 billion in 80 countries watched the 2008 Paralympics - including a total of 1.4 billion viewings in China across 11 days, 670 million in Japan and 439 million in Germany. Calculating figures in that way means individual viewers are counted several times.

More coverage of the London?Paralympics from NBC News

The daughter of the founder of the Paralympics told NBC News that the record-breaking ticket sales and interest in the London event would have made her father "immensely proud."

Eva Loeffler said Ludwig "Poppa" Guttmann ? a neurologist who pioneered the rehabilitation of paralyzed Second World War service members at a hospital near London ? would have been "extremely pleased" at how the Games had captured the public imagination.

Lt. Brad Snyder, blinded by an IED explosion in Afghanistan, is now training for the London 2012 Paralympics.

The 79-year-old said it was "very appropriate, in a way" that so many veterans from the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts were taking part in this year's event. "Helping the military wounded was where it all began, after all," she said.

London 2012: Who were the real winners, losers?

Guttman, who fled Germany in 1933 after being persecuted by Hitler's Nazi regime, challenged medical orthodoxy at Stoke Mandeville hospital, north?west of London, by encouraging patients to play sports rather than accept their paralysis.

Peter Macdiarmid / Getty Images

The Agitos symbol of the Parlaympics has replaced the Olympic rings on London's iconic Tower Bridge.

When London hosted the Summer Olympics in 1948, he created the Stoke Mandeville Games involving just 16 competitors. In the years that followed, he built his competition into the parallel Paralympic Games.

This year's event will feature 4,200 athletes from 166 teams competing in 20 sports.

For British wheelchair tennis star Jordanne Whiley, the Paralympics isn't just about winning - she also wants to outshine her bronze-medal winning father's achievements in the event. ITN's Lewis Vaughan Jones met them both as part of his series highlighting Paralympians and their sports.

Although Guttman died in 1980, Loeffler has continued his work, becoming a key figure in disabled sport ? and has accepted an honorary role as mayor of the Paralympic Athletes' Village at the Olympic Park in East London.

'Second-class citizens': Wheelchair user's fury at Paralympics over seating

One of Guttman's dreams was that disabled athletes would ultimately compete alongside their able-bodied counterparts ? a wish that came true last month with Pistorius' historic participation at the Olympics.

"He would have regarded that as a great moment, I'm sure," Loeffler said.

Hyundai Starting to Hog the U.S. Automotive Road | InvestorPlace

Popular Posts:

Recent Posts:

I can remember back in the late-1980s when driving a Hyundai was the epitome of un-cool. Well, things have certainly changed since then. Now, Hyundai?s are known for their style, quality, and affordability ? and even for being, dare I say it, ?cool.?

This is a development not lost on U.S. auto giants Ford (NYSE:F) and General Motors (NYSE:GM), or on the Japanese automakers Honda (NYSE:HMC) and Toyota (NYSE:TM). Even German behemoth Volkswagen AG (PINK:VLKAY) is likely watching Hyundai?s remarkable progress, and well it should.

Through the first half of 2012, Hyundai Group?s U.S. market share ? which includes Kia-brand vehicles ? held steady vs. the prior year?s six months. The company captured 8.87% of the market midway through 2012, down slightly from the 8.97% it garnered through the first six months of 2011. By comparison, the much larger Ford and GM saw their respective market share fall in the first half of the year, with Ford?s share sliding 1.21% to 15.68%, and GM?s share declining 1.83% to 18.09%. Hyundai also bested rival Nissan (PINK:NSANY) in market share, as well as Volkswagen.

Earlier this year, John Krafcik, chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, announced that the company aims to increase its U.S. sales to 700,000 cars and sport-utility vehicles this year, which is a roughly 8% increase over the prior year. The only thing holding Hyundai back is the fact that its production facilities at the time were already running near full capacity. And while the company is reportedly contemplating adding more production facilities, a decline in demand from buyers in Europe has allowed Hyundai to ship some inventory originally intended for Europe back to the U.S.

To be certain, things haven?t been all roses for Hyundai, especially recently. The company?s exports stalled in July, down some 23% because of a labor dispute that has crippled production. According to the company, the total number of Hyundai and Kia vehicles made in July sank to 120,493, a big drop from the 156,200 units made in the previous month.

Here?s the money quote from the Hyundai statement as reported by the Wall Street Journal: ?U.S. dealerships for Hyundai and Kia had some difficulty meeting soaring demand due to a shortage of vehicles.? Moreover, the company said it had less than a month of inventory remaining as of Aug. 1. That?s well below the optimal inventory levels of 60 days.

The supply constraints caused by the strike in South Korean production facilities will likely take its toll on Hyundai and Kia sales, but whatever sales disruption takes place, it will likely be a mere bump in the road for the company. Once Hyundai settles the disputes and gets back on track with full production, the race with U.S., Japanese and German automakers will resume.

The long-term implications of Hyundai?s drive into the lead pack of top-selling automakers in the U.S. sales means an increasingly competitive marketplace for the likes of Ford and GM. It also means that to stay competitive, these companies likely will have to offer more discounts on more models, which will take an increasing bite out of profit margins.

To combat the loss of U.S. market share, Ford and particularly GM will have to search for market share outside the states. The only problem is that Europe is mired in recession, and the other big market, China, is having its own struggles with economic growth.

To be certain, the U.S. auto market is where it?s at for car makers, and any company making gains here at home is liable to cause an uncomfortable stir for those currently in the top spot. So, if you?re an investor in U.S. auto stocks, you better keep your eyes on the rearview mirror ? because Hyundai is catching up.

As of this writing, Jim Woods did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

Saltire Prize firms to be named

The renewable energy companies competing for the ?10m Saltire Prize will be announced by the Scottish government later.

The announcement will be made in Orkney, where members of the Scottish Cabinet will meet on Wednesday.

The competition was set up to encourage the development of wave and tidal energy devices in Scottish waters.

Renewable energy firms will compete to see which device can produce the most electricity over two years.

The rules state: "The Saltire Prize winner will be the team that achieves the greatest volume of electrical output over the set minimum hurdle of 100 gigawatt hours over a continuous two-year period, using only the power of the sea."

The latest phase of the contest will run until 2017. That means other renewable energy companies still have time to enter.

'Tantalising offer'

Ministers are also expected to announce the Scottish government is to invest ?2.5m in a project to provide new dock facilities at Stromness in Orkney.

But their political opponents have accused them of failing to do enough to promote marine energy.

The Scottish Green MSP, Patrick Harvie, said: "Surely there's a limit to the number of times the Saltire Prize can be re-announced?

"The marine energy sector has vast potential for Scotland, but what it needs is steady, solid, day-to-day support from government.

"The tantalising offer of a cash prize one day for one winner is no substitute for that."

if the debt is secured by a lien which could not be avoided under Bankruptcy Code ?522(f). ???? The Bankruptcy Court found that Bankruptcy Code ?522(f)(1)(B)(i) provides for avoidance of nonpossessory, non-purchase money security interests on household furnishings or households goods that are held primarily for the personal, family or household use of the debtor or a dependent of the debtor. ???? Citing its prior decision in the case of? In re: Goad? the Bankruptcy Court implicitly found that a mobile home is either a household furnishing or good under Bankruptcy Code ?522(f)(1)(B)(i). ???? The District Court, on appeal, decided that a mobile home was in no manner a household good or furnishing, as required under that subsection.? Neither of those terms is defined by the Bankruptcy Code.? The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals has explained that household goods under this subsection are those items of personal property that are typically found in or around the home and are used by debtor or his dependents to support and facilitate day-to-day living within the house.? The District Court stated that it was clear that a mobile home is virtually incapable of itself being contained within a home.? In addition, a mobile home was not the type of thing used ?around the home? which facilitates ? living within the home.? ???? The District Court examined several cases from across the country dealing with this same issue and discovered only one other court which had agreed with the Bankruptcy Court that a mobile home is a household good.? Thus, the District Court concluded that the Bankruptcy Court improperly applied Bankruptcy Code ?522(f) and that a proper application of that subsection resulted in the lien in question being unavoidable.? The Goad case was overruled in that district and is no longer good law before that District Court.

???? In summary, the debtor was not entitled to avoid the lien on her mobile home held by the finance company.

Marketing Truths - Direct Business Marketing

Hello and welcome, my name is Andrew Houglum with Direct Business Marketing. Today we?re going to talk about a marketing truth known as ?Building a Better Bridge?. First I wanted to talk about marketing truths and what they are. At our business we?ve found that no matter what you?re marketing, if you follow these truths when you?re developing a campaign and messaging out to your potential clients your results will be much better. As we go through all of these, definitely wash them all and it will help you.

The first one we?re going to talk about is ?Build a Better Bridge?. What do we mean by this? This is a marketing truth that holds true from print marketing all the way to online marketing. The first thing in building a better bridge is what are your prospective clients searching on online marketing or looking for offline marketing. The next question is, ?What are you selling?? Really identifying your business is important and this is where a lot of businesses make their mistakes because they feel that they?re selling something that they?re not. This marketing truth is basically reminding you to make sure you recognize what your prospects are looking for, what you?re selling and make sure there?s a bridge between the two. Ensure that you can deliver what the prospect is looking for and bridge them over to what you?re selling so they can make the connection between the two.

In closing, figure out what you?re selling, figure out what they?re looking for, build that bridge and all of your marketing materials will perform better. Again, my name is Andrew Houglum; my contact information can be found on the last slide. I?d also like to remind you to join us every Wednesday at 10am PST for more of these live webinars. Thanks for watching.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Champion at Wimbledon in both singles and doubles. Winner again at the All England Club in both events, four weeks later at the London Olympics.

Nobody would blame Serena Williams if she felt worn down by this year's jam-packed tennis calendar. She doesn't see it that way, though ? even with the grind of the U.S. Open looming.

"I look forward to this," Williams said. "It's almost as like a launching pad for what I want to do for the rest of the hard-court season."

In a way, yes, Monday's start of the year's last Grand Slam actually marks something of a new beginning ? the kickoff of a six-month stretch on the hard courts that winds down at the 2013 Australian Open.

Call it mental gymnastics, a creative way of looking at things or whatever else might apply. What can't be denied is that in an Olympic year, the U.S. Open ? considered the toughest test in tennis even under normal circumstances ? is essentially the season's fifth major.

"A lot of them," Jim Courier said, "are running on fumes."

Indeed, many top players have had to double down on their fitness and find new, creative ways of organizing their schedules to get ready for what they hope will be a two-week grind in the fishbowl that is Flushing Meadows.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic barely took any time off following his fourth-place finish at the Olympics. He traveled to Toronto for a hard-court tuneup, played six matches and won the tournament.

Then, he flew to Cincinnati, played six more matches but lost to Roger Federer in the final. No shame there, though that loss to Federer did include an uncharacteristic 6-0 whitewashing in the first set.

"Mentally, I wasn't there, wasn't fresh," Djokovic said. "It had been a very busy time starting at the Olympic Games, and maybe that caught up with me at the end."

No big deal in Cincinnati. But a half-hour mental lapse in New York could mean the end of Djokovic's quest to win what has, essentially, shaped up as the tiebreaker major for 2012.

Second-seeded Djokovic won the Australian Open. Rafael Nadal won the French Open. Top-seeded Federer won Wimbledon. Just for good measure, third-seeded Andy Murray won the Olympics, meaning the U.S. Open could essentially determine the player of the year in men's tennis.

Some combination of Nadal ? absent this year because of a knee injury ? and the other three have occupied every spot in the finals of the past eight Grand Slam tournaments.

Who has the most to gain over this fort night? John McEnroe thinks it's Murray, who has the Olympic gold, but is still in search of his first Grand Slam title.

"The way it pans out, it's conceivable that Murray could make an argument were he to win this ... that you could say he's the best player in the world this year," McEnroe said. "To me, that's an unbelievable upside."

Murray opens Monday in Arthur Ashe Stadium against Alex Bogomolov Jr., of Russia.

Federer, back at the top of the rankings after 25? months during which Nadal and Djokovic took the spot from him, has a night match Monday against American Donald Young, who is 3-21 this season.

Federer says there's a difference between how he feels now and last year, when he had two match points in the semifinals against Djokovic, but lost both and closed out his first full season since 2002 without a Grand Slam title.

"I think I felt good last year, but probably felt that maybe, at times, the matches were not always on my racket," he said. "Whereas maybe this time around, I feel like if I'm playing well, I can dictate who's going to win or lose."

Though the women's game has been more in flux than the men's of late ? seven different winners over the past seven Grand Slams ? the math is essentially the same in 2012: Three of the top four women ? No. 1 Victoria Azarenka (Australia), No. 3 Maria Sharapova (France) and No. 4 Williams (Wimbledon) ? have major titles this year and all need this one to break the tie.

Where things differ is in the way Williams has been playing of late. She lost a total of 17 games over six matches in the Olympics, punctuating it with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sharapova in the final ? the kind of drubbing that would have to come to mind if the two should meet in the U.S. Open final on Sept. 8.

Sharapova had two hard-court tune-up tournaments on her schedule, but pulled out of both with a stomach virus.

"I think it was a sign my body just needed to slow down," she said. "It was a lot of travel, a lot of playing. I had a hectic summer. So, I decided to shut it down until here, because we still have a lot to play towards the end of the year."

Kim Clijsters, on the other hand, doesn't have to save any energy for down the road. Win or lose, she says the U.S. Open will be it for her.

"Here," she said, while pointing to her heart. "You feel when it's right."

Clijsters has won her past 21 matches at Flushing Meadows. In 2005, she won the tournament. She didn't return again until 2009, after she had gotten married and had a daughter, Jada. With virtually no tournament play under her belt in 2009, Clijsters won seven matches to become the first unseeded woman to capture the U.S. Open.

Because of how busy 2012 has been, she'll do the same as Sharapova ? come into the U.S. Open not having played a competitive match since the Olympics.

Is this any way to prepare for her farewell?

"I remember 2009, I didn't have many matches, either," Clijsters said. "So I don't worry about that."

NYPD confirms: All bystanders hit by police bullets

Officials in New York City defend police officers use of deadly force, as seen on graphic video, to stop gunman Jeffrey Johnson outside the Empire State Building. Nine bystanders were injured. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

?

By Tom Hays and Verena Dobnik, NBCNewYork.com

All nine people wounded during a dramatic confrontation between police and a gunman outside the Empire State Building were struck by bullets fired by the two officers, police said Saturday, citing ballistics evidence.

The veteran patrolmen who opened fire on the suit-wearing gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, had only an instant to react when he whirled and pointed a .45-caliber pistol as they approached him from behind on a busy sidewalk.

Officer Craig Matthews shot seven times. Officer Robert Sinishtaj fired nine times, police said. Neither had ever fired their weapons before on a patrol.

More from NBCNewYork.com

The volley of gunfire felled Johnson in just a few seconds and left nine other people bleeding on the sidewalk.

In the initial chaos Friday, it wasn't clear whether Johnson or the officers were responsible for the trail of wounded, but based on ballistic and other evidence, "it appears that all nine of the victims were struck either by fragments or by bullets fired by police," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters on Saturday at a community event in Harlem.

Surveillance video shows what transpired Friday when gunman Jeffrey Johnson drew his weapon and opened fire on police on a street packed with pedestrians in midtown Manhattan. Who was Johnson and what possibly caused him to become violent?

He reiterated that the officers appeared to have no choice but to shoot Johnson, whose body had 10 bullet wounds in the chest, arms and legs.

"I believe it was handled well," Kelly said.

The officers confronted Johnson as he walked, casually, down the street after gunning down a former co-worker on the sidewalk outside the office they once shared. The shooting happened at 9 a.m., as the neighborhood bustled with people arriving for work.

'Look of death': Co-workers tell of office feud

The gunman and his victim, Steve Ercolino, had a history of workplace squabbles before Johnson was laid off from their company, Hazan Import Corp., a year ago. At one point, the two men had grappled physically in an elevator.

John Koch, the property manager at the office building where the men worked, said security camera footage showed the two pushing and shoving. The tussle ended when Ercolino, a much larger man, pinned Johnson against the wall of the elevator by the throat, Koch said. Ercolino let him go after a few moments, and the two men went their separate ways.

"They didn't like each other," Koch said.

On Friday, Johnson shot Ercolino five times in the head and face, a medical examiner's spokeswoman said. After the shooting, Johnson, an eccentric T-shirt designer and avid bird-watcher who wore a suit every day, even when photographing hawks in Central Park, walked away as if nothing had happened.

Alerted by a construction worker, Officers Matthews and Sinishtaj gave chase as Johnson rounded a corner and walked along Fifth Avenue, in front of the landmark skyscraper.

A security videotape from the scene shows several civilians ? including three sitting on a bench only a few feet away ? scattering as the officers opened fire.

Police have determined that three people were struck by whole bullets ? two of which were removed from victims at the hospital ? and the rest were grazed "by fragments of some sort," Kelly said.

Three people remained hospitalized, all in stable condition, police said.

Both Matthews, 39, and Sinishtaj, 40, joined the nation's largest police department 15 years ago.

Matthews had drawn attention earlier this year by filing a lawsuit against the New York Police Department that accused his superiors of unfairly punishing him for not meeting arrest quotas. A judge threw out the complaint.

There was no immediate response to a message left with the union representing the two officers.

The shooting didn't deter tourists from flocking to the Empire State Building as usual on Saturday.

Patricia Flynn, 57, a retired schoolteacher, visited the building's peak with her elderly mother, who once worked in the skyscraper as a secretary.

"But I didn't tell her what happened," said Flynn, adding that her mother was unaware of Friday's shooting. "And she really enjoyed the view."

A group of 31 tourists from all over France held a meeting Friday night at their nearby hotel to decide whether to cancel their planned Empire State Building visit.

"We were scared, and we thought it was a risk," said Catherine Krukar, 38, a teacher.

But in the end, they went ahead with the visit, she said after descending from the observation tower,

"We know it can happen anywhere, and we wanted to see the Empire State Building," Krukar said. "It was beautiful!

Krall plays 'Fly Me to the Moon' for Armstrong

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Diana Krall knows how to pay tribute to Neil Armstrong.

The jazz singer-pianist tenderly played the standard "Fly Me to the Moon" during a Saturday concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

She once was lucky enough to share a glass of wine with the first man to walk on the moon, Krall said. The astronaut died Saturday at 82.

"He's probably thinking, 'Do I have to listen to that song again?'" Krall said lightly, after gazing up at the night sky from the stage of the outdoor amphitheater.

The musician, who sent her love out to Armstrong's family, also had a message for her husband, Elvis Costello.

She performed the classic tune "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," changing the lyric to "his face," then said she sang it with Costello in mind on his birthday. The rock musician turned 58 on Saturday.

"Happy birthday, EC," Krall said later as she closed the concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by jazz man Alan Broadbent.

Tropical Storm Isaac dumps heavy rains on flood-prone Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac strengthened as it dumped heavy rains on Haiti on Saturday, threatening floods and mudslides in a country where hundreds of thousands of people remain homeless more than two years after a devastating earthquake.

Lashing rains and high winds were reported along parts of Haiti's southern coast and in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, where more than 350,000 survivors of the 2010 earthquake are still living in fragile tent and tarpaulin camps.

Intermittent power outages affected the greater Port-au-Prince area in the early hours of Saturday as Isaac bore down on the impoverished Caribbean country.

Isaac was about 65 miles south-southwest of Port-au-Prince late Friday night, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

The storm had sustained winds of 70 miles per hour (110 km per hour) and its center was expected to pass over Haiti's southern coast early Saturday.

Isaac's march across the Caribbean comes as U.S. Republicans prepare to gather in Tampa, on Florida's central Gulf Coast, for Monday's start of their national convention ahead of the November presidential election.

The convention is still expected to proceed as planned but Gulf of Mexico operators began shutting down offshore oil and gas rigs on Friday ahead of the storm.

But the biggest immediate concern was heavily deforested Haiti and the NHC warned there was a possibility Isaac could reach hurricane intensity before making landfall in Haiti.

On Friday, the government and aid groups evacuated thousands of tent camp dwellers but many Haitians chose to remain in their flimsy, makeshift homes, apparently out of fear they will be robbed, said Bradley Mellicker, head of disaster management for the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

"There's a lot of people who are resisting because they are scared of losing what little they have now," Mellicker said.

About 3,000 volunteers from the government's Civil Protection office were dispatched across Haiti, warning people about flood and landslide risks, and about 1,250 shelters -- schools, churches or other community buildings -- that have opened their doors to house people seeking refuge from the storm.

But Red Cross officials said the number of shelters could be grossly inadequate and Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe acknowledged Haiti had "limited means" to ensure public safety.

Red Cross and IOM representatives joined government officials in trying to evacuate 8,000 of the "most vulnerable people," including 2,500 sick and disabled, from 18 tent camps in low-lying coastal areas of Port-au-Prince.

Many Haitians, most of whom scrape by on less than $1 per day, consider disaster an inevitable part of life in the poorest country in the Americas.

"We live under tents. If there's too much rain and wind, water comes in. There's nothing we can do," said Nicholas Absolouis, an unemployed 34-year-old mechanic at one camp for homeless people on the northern edge of the chaotic capital.

"There are still too many people living in the camps. There's a good chance that those might be destroyed with the passage of the cyclone," said France Hurtubise of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Haiti.

Flooding could also help reignite a cholera epidemic, which has killed more than 7,500 people in Haiti since the disease first appeared in October 2010, foreign aid workers said.

On its current path, forecasters said Isaac would hit Cuba and the southern tip of Florida before strengthening into a Category 1 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico and making landfall anywhere from the Florida Panhandle in the northwestern part of the state to Alabama and as far west as New Orleans.

A tropical storm warning was issued for the entire coast of south Florida on Friday, and a hurricane warning also went into effect in the Florida Keys.

Isaac has drawn especially close scrutiny because of the Republican Party's convention, a four-day meeting during which former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will receive the party's presidential nomination.

Party officials insist the convention will go ahead, even if they have to alter the schedule. But NHC meteorologist Rick Danielson said Tampa could potentially be hit by coastal flooding and driving winds or rain.

"There is still a full range of possible impacts on Tampa at this point," he said.

Danielson said it was very hard to project intensity before Isaac passes over mountainous Cuba on Saturday and Sunday and enters the Florida Straits. But the Florida Keys, the island chain off the southernmost part of the state, were definitely in harm's way.

Campaign Notebook: A One-Person 'Debate' About Jobs

Senate

Linda McMahon may have declined Chris Murphy?s invitation to debate earlier this week in Hartford, but that didn?t stop Murphy from showing up at the debate anyways. According to CT News Junkie, Murphy spent the "debate" talking about his jobs plan and taking written questions from the crowd.

Some volunteers from the McMahon campaign reportedly showed up to heckle the congressman and hand out information about McMahon?s jobs plan.

Fifth District

The Democratic primary has been settled, with Elizabeth Esty upsetting Chris Donovan. Despite the outcome, Donovan is still in the race as a candidate for the Working Families Party. The Hartford Courant reports that there?s pressure on Donovan to back out of the race and allow Esty to focus on Republican Andrew Roraback.

Washington statement gels with my analysis of US intent in Asia

Earlier in the week I published the following arguments?in the AFR and on the Lowy Interpreter:

A third insight is that I think some of the experts and politicians with whom I have spoken, and the public more widely, get the rise of China, the US reaction function, and our economic and strategic relations with each, wrong.

I hear many people offer China strategic deference for lifting hundreds of millions out of financial (if not political) poverty. Coupled with Australia's economic integration with China, much like UK and German integration prior to 1914, this infuses an alleged tension into our strategic decision-making process. One gets this sense reading David Uren's latest book.

Should we contemplate distancing ourselves from a heavy-handed US hell-bent on clinging to its historical primacy, which is capable of destabilising the region as much as China? Should we consider Swiss or Swedish-style neutrality? Could we imagine aligning ourselves with the Middle Kingdom?

At this juncture, I don't think these are legitimate options. I argue that China's progress over the last sixty years is as much attributable to US hegemony and the post-Bretton Woods economic stability established and enshrined by US-led Western states as any actions on the part of Chinese leaders.

China's prosperity has been built on subsidised exports to North American and European markets. These subsidies, which have been reluctantly tolerated by the West, include currency manipulation, undervalued labour, and intellectual property theft. China has also stealthily resisted reciprocating free trade by making it difficult for foreign companies to compete in its domestic markets.

I argue that these misunderstandings lead us to misconstrue US intent, and the policy of containment. I believe that US policymakers recognise, as much as Australians do, that the epicentre of global growth in the next 50 years will be found in Asia. Their financial future, as much as ours, will be fueled by exports to Indo-Pacific nations, and demand generated by billions of new middle-income consumers.

I think US policymakers have resolved that in order to protect their own economic and political interests, and ensure that the region is not mortally disrupted by non-democratic actors, they have an obligation to both developed democratic nations, and to their own taxpayers, to maintain their Indo-Pacific leadership. This is the US policy of least regret.

And it is clearly exemplified in Hillary Clinton's recent essay for Foreign Policy, which I think has been to some extent neglected in the domestic debate. She does not conceive of this as an 'Asian Century' but rather as 'America?s Pacific Century'. Now that is fascinating.

And then today the US State Department calls a sudden media conference with Australian journalists to correct misunderstandings about the US approach to the region, and to reject Hugh White's China Choice:

The US has told Australia that it is "foolhardy" to think it needs to make a choice between America and China.

Kurt Campbell, the top Asia policy official in the US State Department, said America wanted to correct "false assessments" in the emerging debate about strategy in Australia.

Mr Campbell said he realised some debate in Australia posed it as a choice for Australia between its strong alliance with the US and stronger ties with a rising China. But "such a choice would be foolhardy", as well as unnecessary, he said. Mr Campbell said the idea that the US was trying to exclude a rising China from sharing power in the Asia-Pacific region was "patently false".

Former Australian prime minister Paul Keating argued earlier this month that the US needed to do more to accommodate Chinese power.

He cited what he called the Keating mantra, "that great states need strategic space and that if they are not provided some, they will take it''.

But Mr Campbell said of Mr Keating's remark: "If he's referring to some 19th century kind of colonial division, then I would reject that."

He said that "no country has taken more trouble to engage with China" than the US. If anything, the US had been giving China more responsibility in global affairs than it was comfortable with.

"Look at the role they play in international relations in the global economy, look at the role they play across the spectrum," he said, citing Iran, Syria, North Korea and issues of nuclear non-proliferation. "You name it, there are ample opportunities for China to play a larger role in politics."
