Fitness standards for space tourists studied

The rise of space tourism is going to bring a new headache to doctors' doors: whether or not to approve their patients for spaceflight. Worse, a new paper cautions, there is no established protocol in place to judge a person fit for making the trip.

The new study stops short of suggesting rigid regulation, saying that too much of it would hurt the space tourism industry before it even gets off the ground. Rather, the researchers encourage doctors to "consider developing a resource file for future reference."

Lead author Marlene Grenon said her team's recent paper in the British Medical Journal was designed to make doctors aware of potential health issues related to spaceflight. How to set medical standards, and the implications for insurance, are matters for further research, she said.

"The question is, should there be standards set or not?" said Grenon, an assistant professor of vascular surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. "If you start (restricting) the number of people who are going to fly to the healthiest people, you're not going to encourage the market to develop." [Photos: The First Space Tourists]

More data needed
Aerospace is one of the most highly regulated industries in the world. In the United States, pilots and crew members must pass strict medical exams authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The military has its own set of exams for Navy aviators and Air Force pilots.

Standards are even more stringent for NASA astronauts. Laser eye surgery is permitted when an astronaut is selected, but only if it was performed more than a year ago. The ability to cope in small spaces, under high stress, is extensively tested. Nutrition, exercise and mental health are constantly evaluated and recorded in the years of training before an astronaut launches.

Physicians have plenty of data about these super-healthy space travelers. But there's little advice available for more ordinary specimens ? people with health issues such as osteoporosis, for example. Only a handful of space tourists, politicians and other non-specialized astronauts have journeyed into orbit.

Doctors aren't fumbling completely in the dark, though, as they already know many of the effects of weightlessness on the human body. Microgravity hardens arteries, affects eyeballs and weakens bones. Astronauts also can get motion sickness, accumulate large doses of potentially dangerous radiation and experience kidney stones.

Kidney stones are never pleasant, but they can be particularly problematic on orbit. In 1982, the Soviet Union planned to evacuate an astronaut with a severe case from its Salyut 7 space station but ultimately decided against it.

Setting a standard
If a potential space tourist were to pop in Grenon's office today and ask for medical approval, Grenon said her primary tool would be standards set by the company flying the astronaut.

This leaves medical procedures in the hands of Virgin Galactic and other private companies, meaning that physical exams are not necessarily subject to government regulation.

Doctors are working to fill the gap. In June, an FAA-sponsored medical group suggested guidelines for flight crew and spaceflight participants.

The 23-page document suggests pre-flight measures such as medical questionnaires, screening for certain mental health conditions, and chest X-rays and electrocardiograms.

The guidelines are not binding, and the FAA's center of excellence for commercial space transportation cautioned that it does not necessarily endorse the recommendations. But Grenon said this effort is the best one put forth so far.

Medical tests will matter even more during lengthier space missions, Grenon added. On the first flights, tourists will "only be in microgravity for a few minutes. But as we step more into space and we go into a space hotel, those (conditions) are all things that will need to be better understood."

Grenon's co-authors have affiliations with the Canadian Space Agency, Virgin Galactic and several Canadian and U.S. medical schools. One has even been to space ? Millie Hughes-Fulford flew on the space shuttle's STS-40 mission in 1991.

First freshwater mosasaur discovered

Thursday, December 20, 2012

A new mosasaur species discovered in Hungary is the first known example of this group of scaled reptiles to have lived in freshwater river environments similar to modern freshwater dolphins, according to research published December 19 in the open-access journal PLOS ONEby Laszlo Makadi from the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Hungary and colleagues from the University of Alberta, Canada and MTA-ELTE Lend?let Dinosaur Research Group, Hungary.

The species lived about 84 million years ago, the largest specimens reached about 20 feet in length, and belongs to a family called ?mosasaurs?, conventionally thought of as gigantic finned marine lizards, similar and perhaps even related to present day monitor lizards. The researchers discovered several fossils of the new species, ranging from small juveniles to large adults that suggest that this species had limbs like a terrestrial lizard, a flattened, crocodile-like skull, and a tail unlike other known members of the mosasaur family.

The fossils were recovered from an open-pit mine in the Bakony Hills of Western Hungary, which were once flood-plains. According to the study, this is the first known mosasaur that lived in freshwater, and only the second specimen of a mosasaur to have been found in rocks that were not once deposited in the ocean. Makadi says, "The evidence we provide here makes it clear that similar to some lineages of cetaceans, mosasaurs quickly adapted to a variety of aquatic environments, with some groups re- invading available niches in freshwater habitats. The size of Pannoniasaurus makes it the largest known predator in the waters of this paleo-environment."

Even in the modern world, scaly reptiles in the aquatic world are extremely rare. Only a few species live in the water, and even fewer, like marine iguanas and sea kraits, live in the oceans. The new species described here probably adapted to freshwater environments similarly to river dolphins, such as those now inhabiting the Amazon, Ganges and Yangtze rivers.

Maya 'end of days' fever reaches climax in Mexico

CHICHEN ITZA, Mexico (Reuters) - Thousands of mystics, hippies and spiritual wanderers will descend on the ruins of Maya cities on Friday to celebrate a new cycle in the Maya calendar, ignoring fears in some quarters that it might instead herald the end of the world.

Brightly dressed indigenous Mexican dancers whooped and invoked a serpent god near the ruins of Chichen Itza late on Thursday, while meditating westerners hoped for the start of a "golden age" of humanity.

"I see it as a changing of an energy, the changing of a guard, the changing of universal consciousness," said Serg Miejylo, a 29-year-old gardener originally from Connecticut.

Wearing sandals, smoking a rolled-up cigarette and sporting blonde dreadlocks, Miejylo is among those joining the festivities at Maya sites in southern Mexico and parts of Central America.

But while people here were celebrating, the close of the 13th bak'tun - a period of some 400 years - in the 5,125-year-old Long Calendar of the Maya has raised fears among groups around the world that the end is nigh.

A U.S. scholar once said it could be seen as a kind of "Armageddon" by the illustrious Mesoamerican culture, and over time the idea snowballed into a belief that the Maya calendar had predicted the earth's destruction.

Fears of mass suicides, meteorites, huge power cuts, natural disasters, epidemics or an asteroid hurtling toward Earth have circulated on the Internet ahead of December 21.

Chinese police have arrested about 1,000 people this week for spreading rumors about December 21, and authorities in Argentina restricted access to a mountain popular with UFO-spotters after rumors began spreading that a mass suicide was planned there.

In Texas, video game mogul Richard Garriott de Cayeux decided to throw his most elaborate party ever at midnight - just in case the Earth did come to an end.

Maya experts, scientists and even U.S. space agency NASA insist the Maya did not predict the world's end and that there is nothing to worry about.

"Think of it like Y2K," said James Fitzsimmons, a Maya expert at Middlebury College in Vermont. "It's the end of one cycle and the beginning of another cycle."

A NEW DAWN?

New Age optimism, stream-of-consciousness evocations of wonder and awe, and starry-eyed dreams of extra-terrestrial contact have descended on the ancient sites this week - leaving the modern Maya bemused.

"It's pure Hollywood," said Luis Mis Rodriguez, 45, a Maya selling obsidian figurines and souvenirs shaped into knives like ones the Maya once used for human sacrifice.

In Chichen Itza, below a labyrinth of gray and white Maya pillars, a circle of some 40 tourists sat meditating silently on Thursday.

At one point, a woman in a pink shirt said "the golden age is truly golden" and asked the group to find a form of light to take them to another dimension. The meditation then resumed.

Moments earlier, indigenous dancers wearing white linen, bright feathers and beads shook maracas and the seed pod of the flame tree to the beat of drums at the foot of the Temple of serpent god Kukulkan, a focal point of Friday's celebrations.

"We ask all the brothers of the Earth that Kukulkan dominates the hearts of the entire world," said one of the dancers, raising his arms towards the sky.

The Maya civilization reached its peak between A.D. 250 and 900 when it ruled over large swathes of what is now southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras. The Maya developed hieroglyphic writing, an advanced astronomical system and a sophisticated calendar.

DOOMSDAY PREDICTIONS

There is a long tradition of calling time on the world.

Basing his calculations on prophetic readings of the Bible, the great scientist Isaac Newton once cited 2060 as a year when the planet would be destroyed.

U.S. preacher William Miller predicted that Jesus Christ would descend to Earth in October 1844 to purge mankind of its sins. When it didn't happen, his followers, known as the Millerites, refereed to the event as The Great Disappointment.

In 1997, 39 members of the Heaven's Gate cult, believing the world was about to be "recycled," committed suicide in San Diego to board an alien craft they said was trailing behind a comet.

More recently, American radio host Harold Camping predicted the world would end on May 21, 2011, later moving the date forward five months when the apocalypse failed to materialize.

Such thoughts were far from the minds on Friday of gaudily attired pilgrims to Chichen Itza seeking spiritual release.

"What I hope is that I let go of all the old belief system and all the past and I just enter into a new reality that is even better," said Flow Lesur, 48, a Frenchwoman now living in California who teaches underwater yoga in her spare time.

Faun Rouse, a 78-year-old visitor from Colorado, was thinking of a different kind of inner contentment when asked how she would mark the coming of a new epoch. "With a big steak and lobster dinner, then fly back on Saturday," she said.

ASSIUT, Egypt (AP) ? A campaign of intimidation by Islamists left most Christians in this southern Egyptian province too afraid to participate in last week's referendum on an Islamist-drafted constitution they deeply oppose, residents say. The disenfranchisement is hiking Christians' worries over their future under empowered Muslim conservatives.

Around a week before the vote, some 50,000 Islamists marched through the provincial capital, Assiut, chanting that Egypt will be "Islamic, Islamic, despite the Christians." At their head rode several bearded men on horseback with swords in scabbards on their hips, evoking images of early Muslims conquering Christian Egypt in the 7th Century.

They made sure to go through mainly Christian districts of the city, where residents, fearing attacks, shuttered down their stores and stayed in their homes, witnesses said.

The day of the voting itself on Saturday, Christian voting was minimal ? as low as seven percent in some areas, according to church officials. Some of those who did try to head to polling stations in some villages were pelted by stones, forcing them to turn back without casting ballots, Christian activists and residents told The Associated Press this week.

The activists now see what happened in Assuit as a barometer for what Christians' status will be under a constitution that enshrines a greater role for Shariah, or Islamic law, in government and daily life. Even under the secular regime of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's Christians complained of discrimination and government failure to protect them and their rights. They fear it will be worse with the Islamists who have dominated Egypt's political landscape since Mubarak's ouster in February 2011.

"When all issues become religious and all the talk is about championing Islam and its prophet, then, as a Christian, I am excluded from societal participation," said Shady Magdy Tobia, a Christian activist in Assiut. "If this does not change, things will only get worse for Christians."

But some of the Christians of Assiut are pushing back against the emboldened Islamists. In recent weeks, young Christians joined growing street protests to demand that the charter is shelved, casting aside decades of political apathy.

Assiut province is significant because it is home to one of Egypt's largest Christian communities ? they make up about 35 percent of the population of 4.5 million, perhaps three times the nationwide percentage. At the same time, it is a major stronghold of Egypt's Islamists, who now dominate its local government. The province was the birthplace of some of the country's most radical Islamist groups and was the main battlefield of an insurgency by Muslim militants in the 1990s.

It was one of 10 provinces that voted in the first round of Egypt's referendum. Nationwide, around 56 percent voted in favor of the draft charter, according to preliminary results. Assiut had one of the strongest "yes" votes at more than 77 percent. It also had a turnout of only 28 percent ? one of the lowest in a round marred by a low participation of only 32 percent nationwide.

The second and final round will held the coming Saturday in 17 provinces, including in Minya, which has the country's highest proportion of Christians, at 36 percent.

Rights groups reported attempts at suppression of the "no" vote in many parts of the country. But Christians say intimidation and suppression are more effective in this smaller, largely rural province.

"In Assiut, we face more danger than in Cairo," said businessman Emad Awny Ramzy, a key organizer of local protests against Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and his ruling Muslim Brotherhood. "Here they can easily identify, monitor and attack us."

A senior figure of the Gamaa Islamiya ? which was once one of the main groups waging the Islamic militant insurgency in Assiut but has since renounced violence and is allied to Morsi's government ? dismissed the Christians' allegations of intimidation in the province.

The claims are "just lies and rumors that surface every time we have an election," Assem Abdel-Magued said. The Brotherhood and officials in Morsi's government have similarly dismissed claims of violations around the country.

The draft constitution, finalized by Islamists on a Constituent Assembly despite a boycott by liberals and Christians, has polarized Egypt, bringing out huge rival street rallies by both camps in the past four weeks. Opponents of Morsi accuse him of ramming the document through and, more broadly, of imposing a Brotherhood domination of power. Morsi supporters, in turn, accuse his opponents of seeking to thwart a right to bring Islamic law they say they earned with election victories the past year.

Egypt's main Coptic Orthodox Church and smaller ones have taken an uncharacteristically assertive approach in the constitutional struggle. They withdrew their six members from the Constituent Assembly to protest Islamist domination of the process and later refused to send representatives to a "national dialogue" called for by Morsi.

The new Coptic pope, Tawadros II, enthroned last month, publicly called some of the charter's articles "disastrous."

In response, the Muslim Brotherhood ? which usually keeps a moderate tone toward Christians ? has turned toward more inflammatory rhetoric.

Senior Brotherhood figure Mohammed el-Beltagi in a newspaper interview this week depicted mass anti-Morsi rallies outside the presidential palace in Cairo this month as mainly made up of Christians, hinting at a Christian conspiracy against the president.

In a recent speech, Safwat Hegazi, a famous Islamist preacher linked to the Brotherhood, warned Christians against joining forces with former Mubarak regime figures to topple Morsi.

"I tell the church, yes, you are our brothers in Egypt, but there are red lines. Our red line is Morsi's legitimacy. Whoever dares splash it with water, we will splash him with blood," he said, using an Arabic saying.

In Assiut, Tobia, Ramzy and other Christian activists spoke of an atmosphere of intimidation ahead of the vote, including the large Islamist march.

They said threatening messages were sent on mobile phones and on social networking sites. During an opposition demonstration on Dec. 7 outside the offices of the Brotherhood's political party in Assiut, suspected Morsi supporters seized six protesters ? five Muslims and one Christian ? beating them and shaving the head of one.

With tension building up over the last four weeks, many Christian voters registered at polling centers located in predominantly Muslim areas did not vote, fearing violence, they said.

Those who made it to polling centers in districts with significant Christian populations were soon frustrated by the long lines or delays, which activists said was intentional. In some cases, they said, Islamists who had voted elsewhere then went to stand in lines in mainly Christian areas to make them longer, increase delays and prompt Christians to give up and leave.

Two Christian clerics said that outside the province's main cities, only about 12 percent of registered Christian voters left their homes on Saturday to vote and that no more than seven percent were able to cast their ballots. They based the figures on statistics gathered by members of the Coptic Church's youth group who monitored voting across the province. The two clerics spoke on condition of anonymity because of sensitivities over the church role in political issues.

In the Christian village of el-Aziyah, only 2,350 of the village's 12,100 registered voters cast ballots on Saturday, according to acting mayor Montaser Malek Yacoub.

Yacoub is among the growing number of Christians who are pushing back against persecution.

He has taken advantage of the tenuous security situation of the past two years and built two churches without permits and reclaimed a large area of state-owned desert that lies outside the village's boundaries toward a rock mountain. Under Mubarak's rule, Christians rarely received permits to build or renovate churches.

"Let me just tell you this: As far as I am concerned, this is our country and everyone else are guests," he said. But "we're ready to cooperate with anyone who shares Egypt with us."

NJ Union Leader Expected to Endorse Christie

New Jersey labor leader Ray Pocino was expected to endorse ?Gov. Chris Christie today in his first re-election campaign appearance, an event that culminates a three -year courtship by the Republican of private sector unions.

?

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Pocino, who represents some 20,000 New Jersey construction workers as vice president of the Laborers International Union of North America, were expected to appear together in Aberdeen. Pocino supported incumbent Democratic Gov. John Corzine three years ago. But he has backed Republicans in the past, as he did with former Gov. Christie Todd Whitman.

?

The labor leader's endorsement, however, is another indication that Christie could be a formidable candidate as he makes his case for a second term. Recent polls, including one just this week, indicate that his popularity has soared because of his immediate, on-the-ground response to Hurricane Sandy, which included his public embrace of President Barack Obama during the heated presidential campaign to make sure that no politics would play a role in dealing with the storm's aftermath.

?

Democrats are now waiting for a decision from Newark Mayor Cory Booker on whether he intends to challenge Christie. One other potential Democratic challenger is state Senate President Steve Sweeney, who is also a top official in the state ironworkers union.

?

Christie has often been odds with the state's public sector unions. But apparently his standing with public unions hasn't suffered, despite his decision two years ago to halt the construction of a Hudson River train tunnel that would have linked New Jersey with Manhattan.

?

Christie has often been quoted as saying he's not anti-union, a point he made in pushing for completion of the two stalled casino projects worth about $6 billion.

GM to buy stake from Treasury, government may lose billions

(Reuters) - General Motors Co said it will buy back 200 million of its shares from the U.S. Treasury and the government plans to sell its remaining stake within 15 months, all but assuring a multibillion dollar loss.

GM Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann said on Wednesday the automaker will pay $5.5 billion, or $27.50 a share, for the Treasury-held shares in a deal expected to close by year-end. That represents a 7.9 percent premium on Tuesday's closing price.

GM shares rose 8.2 percent to $27.58 on Wednesday.

Treasury said it will sell its remaining stake of about 300.1 million shares "through various means in an orderly fashion", and could begin the process as soon as January.

The auto giant, dubbed "Government Motors," received about $50 billion from the Treasury as part of its bankruptcy restructuring in 2009 under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

The stock sale is part of a broader push to wind down the controversial financial bailout, created by U.S. President Barack Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush, to prevent the collapse of the U.S. banking industry during the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

On Tuesday, Treasury said it would largely sell its remaining shares in bailed-out banks over the coming 12 months to 15 months. Last week it sold the last of its common stock in American International Group Inc at a profit.

Obama heavily promoted his decision to use public funds to rescue the auto industry and save jobs as he campaigned for re-election in swing states like Michigan and Ohio. Voters in both states backed him again in the November 6 election, providing critical support in his victory.

POTENTIAL LOSS

The GM sale will raise the proceeds that Treasury has recovered to $28.6 billion. With $20.9 billion left from the original bailout, the government would have to sell its remaining shares at an average price of $69.72 to break even.

If Treasury sold its remaining stock at the price GM is paying now, it would come up short by more than $12 billion.

TARP was approved by Congress as a $700 billion program, though Treasury eventually disbursed $418 billion. On Wednesday it said it had recovered $381 billion to date, or about 90 percent.

"TARP was always meant to be a temporary, emergency program. The government should not be in the business of owning stakes in private companies for an indefinite period of time," Treasury Assistant Secretary Timothy Massad said in a statement.

"Moving to exit our investment in GM within the next 12 to 15 months is consistent with our dual goals of winding down TARP as soon as practicable and protecting taxpayer interests."

After the buyback, Treasury will still own a stake of about 19 percent, down from about 26 percent currently. Ammann said GM will not buy more shares directly from Treasury after this buyback is completed.

Ammann said the move and resulting Treasury plans will remove an "overhang" on the stock that has hurt sales and bring an "element of closure" to the bailout.

GM will end the year with estimated liquidity of about $38 billion, even after the deal, he said. That will add to earnings per share by reducing the number of outstanding shares by about 11 percent.

GM will take a charge of about $400 million in the fourth quarter tied to the buyback.

In addition, Treasury has agreed to relinquish certain governance rights, including required levels of U.S. manufacturing and barring the purchase of corporate jets, Ammann said. Senior executive payment caps under TARP remain in place.

Dominion and FuelCell Energy to Build North America?s Largest Fuel Cell Power Plant in Connecticut

Dominion, a large energy company based in Virginia, and FuelCell Energy Inc. (FCE), a Connecticut manufacturer of fuel cell power plants, have announced that they will be developing the largest fuel cell power plant in North America. Located in Bridgeport, Conn., the plant will use a clean-tech process to transform natural gas into electricity. The 14.9 megawatt facility will produce enough electricity for about 15,000 homes delivered through a local micro-grid.

fuel cell, power plant, Dominion, fuelcell, energy, electrical, generation, clean, renewable, connecticut

The $125 million Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell project is part of the state of Connecticut?s Project 150, a program designed to increase renewable and clean energy projects in the state by 150 megawatts. The program brings together private and public funds through the state?s Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CEFIA) to support development of clean energy projects. The City of Bridgeport is also providing tax incentives to support the fuel cell project. The Connecticut Light & Power Company (CL&P) will buy the electricity under a 15-year purchase agreement.

Dominion, through its subsidiary Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell LLC, is contracting FuelCell Energy to build, operate, and maintain the plant. FCE will supply five of its top-of-the-line 2.8 megawatt DFC3000s fuel cell plants. Construction is to begin immediately, and the facility is scheduled to go into operation in 2013.

FCE?s DFC3000 operates at a very high 47 percent efficiency, according to the company. A company announcement says that fuel cells generate ?ultra-clean? power ?electrochemically, without combustion.? Fuel cell generation emits dramatically lower levels of pollutants such as nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SOx) and particulate matter. Fuel cell technology lends itself to distributed generation, which places power generation close to the point of use, reducing ?the need for electric utilities to invest in costly and difficult to site transmission and distribution grids,? according to FCE.

Dominion CEO Thomas F. Farrell said in a company announcement that Dominion is ?adding fuel cell technology to our energy portfolio that already includes wind, hydro, biomass and, soon, solar.? Dominion owns wind farms in West Virginia and Indiana, a biomass power plant in Virginia, and hydroelectric power stations in Virginia and North Carolina. The company recently initiated a pilot project to test solar-power generation on rooftops leased from commercial and industrial firms.

TOWAMENCIN- How would you feel if your parent worked at North Penn? Would you be excited or would daily life at school feel miserable? Would you receive special treatment or be held to a higher standard by all the other teachers? That sounds like it wouldn?t be something you would want right? Take a brief pause: look past all the potential ?negatives? and try to look at the advantages; you might be surprised to find out that it may not be as bad as it seems.

Although it might not be well known, there are many teachers in North Penn whose children attend this school, and many of them have positive outlooks on the proximity between themselves and their children- all in one school.

The list of faculty includes: Dick Beck- Security Officer; Bonnie Berry- Special Ed Assistant; Jane Brady- Special Ed Assistant; Lisa Buccafuri- Nutrition Services Assistant; Dorothy Ruch- Social Studies Teacher; Denise Burlingame- Special Ed Assistant; Melanie Cassar- FCS Teacher; Keith Clauss- Health & Phys Ed Teacher; Michael Fergus- Health & Phys Ed Teacher; Brenda Flannery- Special Ed Assistant; Sally Kauffman- Nurse; Judith Lassen-Hoffman- Business Ed Teacher; Sadie McDonald- Custodian; Margrit Marino- Mathematics Teacher; Judith McGuriman- Guidance Counselor; Kimberly Milliorn- Special Ed Assistant; Janet Millonig,-Special Ed Assistant; Kathleen Noce- FCS Teacher; Lisa Tyree- Special Ed Assistant; William Walters- Nutrition Services Assistant; Christopher Young- Physics Teacher.

As the era of technology advances, it is becoming more and more a hindrance between parents and children. Many parents? relationships with their children take an unfortunate hiatus and the connection has been severed as they find it very difficult to learn what is going on in the daily affairs of today?s teenagers.

So what happens if the parent happens to be a teacher in the same school building? Does that inside scoop help or hinder their relationship? We took time to ask a few of our very own students and teachers here at North Penn.

Mrs. Margrit Marino: ?We get to spend more time together, I see her in the hallways as well as lunch and I get to know her friends better. An advantage is I know her teachers and they know me, there are no disadvantages, we get a long very well so it?s easy. She doesn?t abuse it or ask me for passes or anything like that, she just comes in says hi and leaves.?

Katie Marino: There aren?t really any cons! It?s so nice having her there because I always have somewhere to go when I need help or someone to talk to! She?s easy to get along with so that makes things easier. Also I like seeing her in school because I would miss her if I didn?t get to see her until after school. I have her as a teacher this year too! I really like having her as a teacher but the only bad part is if I don?t do my homework both my teacher and my mom know.

Teacher Margrit Marino and daughter Katie Marino

Tyler Clauss: It?s good and bad to be honest. He keeps me up to date with my work; he definitely keeps me on track. However, the bad part is if I do something wrong, he knows about it, If I get in trouble he knows about it, and if I try to skip or miss something he knows about it.

Mr. Keith ?Clauss: ?If anything it has made our relationship stronger, we get to spend more time together. He says hi to me in the hallways so I don?t think he minds it. An advantage is I get to hear just about everything that he does or happens to him, but the disadvantage is I get to hear everything he does,? he joked.

Teacher Keith Clauss and son Tyler Clauss

Michelle Lassen:??It?s really helpful because she knows the ins and outs of the school. She can help me with a lot of things. It has made our relationship stronger because we get to see each other every single day!?

Mrs. Judy Hoffman: ?If [our relationship] was affected it has been for the better, I get to see her more often than I would if I were working somewhere else. I am able to know who her friends are and get involved in her culture as well as some of the activities she?s involved with. I can make sure she?s meeting her deadlines, because I have the inside track, and I am able to check the morning announcements, and talk to her coaches and teachers. It?s great for the both of us.?

Teacher Judith Lassen-Hoffman with daughter Michelle Lassen

Alex Noce:??It?s good, I get a ride in the morning, and she can help me if I need help with anything. It enables us to spend more time together every morning and sometimes in the afternoon.?

Mrs. Kathy Noce:??I don?t see him often because he doesn?t take any of my classes but it?s good for him incase he needs anything last minute, or missed the bus going home, I can always be there to give him a ride. It doesn?t bother him because we?re such a big school that me being in the same building doesn?t have an effect on him.?

Teacher ?Kathleen Noce and son Alex Noce

Connor Lawn: ?Now I?m used to it, but it used to be awkward when I was a sophomore because it was my first year in a huge school. But it always gives me that little voice in the back of your head saying you can?t be late or get in trouble or do something stupid, because he?s here in the building and the teachers easily have access to him. He knows everything I do, where I am at all times or where I?m supposed to be at all times.?

Colby Beck:??It?s good when I need him for something, like if I forget something I need. If I have bad grades or do something either way he will find out, or all the teachers especially keep an eye on me.?

Megan Lawn: ?It?s normal to me, we talk when I see him, if I ever forget anything he can easily bring it to me. He gets to know who I?m with a lot of the time, make sure I?m hanging out with the right crowd; he knows all of my friends.?

Mr. Dick Beck: ?Our relationship hasn?t been affected by it at all. It has its advantages, I can give them rides, their teachers can also be easily contacted as well contact me if there is an issue.?

Security guard Dick Beck with children Colby Beck, Megan Lawn, and Connor Lawn

Hannah Young: ?I think it?s a lot of fun having my dad in the building, especially because I get to have him as a teacher and work with him in class cabinet as well it gives us a lot more to talk about and strengthens our relationship. There?s no disadvantages really except if I get in trouble or get bad grades he knows immediately.?

Mr. Chris Young: ?[As well as being her dad] I?m also her teacher for a class so, not only will she get a zero on her homework but she will get grounded also. I think it?s very convenient as well as helpful for the both of us.?

Teacher Christopher Young and daughter Hannah Young

Free Printable Gift Wrap Designs

Free Printable Gift Wrap DesignsWe've covered how to make custom printable gift wrap before but if you like the idea but need a source for geeky or holiday-themed gift wrap designs weblog Mini Eco has you covered.

Right now there are two series of printable papers?the black and white has less holiday themes in lieu of using Pac-Man ghosts, raindrops, and lightning bolts which are great for your geeky friends or those who don't like the holiday theme. The gray and white "cross stitch" series has traditional reindeer, snowflake, and crown designs all made to look like pixel cross stitches along with a Space Invaders cross stitch design.

These may or may not be to your taste but if you need a quick wrap for a last-minute gift they're certainly better than running out for commercial giftwrap.

Jenna von Oy Keeps Her Hometown Of Newtown In Her Prayers

People :

Every school shooting I've ever heard about has been exceedingly heartbreaking and has stirred feelings of both rage and sorrow in me. Each one is tragic and awful, and there have been far too many of them in recent years.

But Friday's massacre in Newtown has affected me in a profoundly personal way, as I have a unique perspective on the town ? I am blessed to have grown up there.

Fox News Tries to Tie TV, Facebook and Gaming to CT Tragedy ...

The news media, quick to find a cause for why a lone gunman would kill his mother, drive to a local elementary school, and kill 26 people (20 children) before killing himself, has turned to the usual scapegoat: video games. While it is understandable that people want answers, Fox News wastes no time in trying to connect TV, Facebook, and computer games to the horrific actions of Lanza. As transcribed by Kotaku, a Fox News segment hosted by Megyn Kelly with guest analyst Dr. Keith Ablow waste no time pointing the finger at the consumption of various types of media:

Kelly: The real question to you is why have there not been more things like this in the past and what is making them seem to come out now?

Ablow: You know you and I have both spoken about this on and off the air, and I fear that our level empathy just as a culture, as a society, is being diminished by things like reality TV and like Facebook that seem to take people to a kind of fictional realm. I guess you could add gaming to that, computer games.

Later in the segment Ablow says that "?such that now people feel less for one another, they can think of them almost as third parties, or entertainment figures or animated creatures, and for the people among us who are vulnerable to acts of violence who are violently ill, if you will, that means they consider others even less than ever before."

Michael Tresca, author of the book "The Evolution of Fantasy Role-Playing Games," takes apart Ablow's theories in this excellent Examiner article. You can watch the Fox News clip in question to your left.

While Fox News is blaming media, other networks are using the tragedy as an opportunity to call for stricter gun control laws and for more funding for mental health services.

Joey Logano aspires to learn from Sprint Cup Champion Brad ...

Joey Logano aspires to learn from Sprint Cup Champion Brad Keselowski ? NASCAR news

Joey Logano intends to hone his racing skills by learning from his new teammate, the 2012 Sprint Cup Champion Brad Keselowski.

After a two day test of the new G6 cars for 2013 Sprint Cup which ended on Wednesday this week, this is what Logano had to say about the prospect of learning from Keselowski.

?I think it?s definitely cool having Brad working with me and vice versa. To see the way Keselowski?s mind works is very interesting. I've learned a lot the last couple days and the way he thinks through a race car is a little bit different than normal, and for me that's cool. I can learn a lot on the way he leads a team and drives a race car and the way he sets up his car,? he said.

According to Logano, Keselowski has the ability to think unconventionally. The way Keselowski approaches his set-up and team work has really impressed Logano.

?The coolest thing about Brad is his ability to think outside of the box - like, way outside of the box,? said Logano.

The 22-year-old has a lot of natural potential and skills as is reflected by his career stats. Logano?s victory at 2008 Meijer 300 in the Nationwide Series and 2009 Lenox Tools 301 in the Sprint Cup Series made him the youngest driver to have won races in 2 of NASCAR?s 3 top divisions. Logano was also the 2009 Sprint Cup Series?Rookie of the Year.

Learning from Keselowski and following in the footsteps of one of the best Sprint Cup drivers will only make things better for Logano as he will find ample opportunities to polish his talent.

With Logano only 22 and Keselowski 28, Penske racing will be entering the 2013 NASCAR season with the youngest driver line-up. It remains to be seen if Keselowski will be able to defend his championship title or not and if Logano will be able to surprise the world with some miracle or not but one can anticipate that Penske Racing have a fair chance of clinching the title in 2013 as well.

Buying and selling In Currency trading: Every thing You Need to ...

If you?re having problems paying your bills you know that finding a way to make some extra money is a huge help. There are millions out there who could use financial relief today. If you want to find an additional source of income and think that forex may be right for you, look through the following information.

Practice makes perfect. Demo trading can help you better understand how forex works, and it can also allow you to avoid making beginner mistakes with your real money. You can also get some excellent trading advice through online tutorials. You should gain a lot of knowledge about the market before you attempt your first trade.

Follow the rule of simplicity when you start off. Attempting to work a system that you don?t yet understand will only make things more difficult. Simple methods are the easiest to work with at first. As you start to become successful and efficient, incorporate some of the more complicated strategies to keep growing. Consider ways of improving from there.

Trading excessively will diminish your credit, but will cause chaos and confusion. You may make less if you are doing more trading.

It is important that you vary the type of analysis you use on the Forex market. Types of analysis include technical, fundamental and sentimental. If you choose to use one analysis and decide not to use the other two, then you are definitely selling yourself short. You should use more kinds of analysis as you are moving forward with Forex trading.

Sharpen your mind?s ability to process data from charts and graphs. Being capable of combining data from many different sources to help you come to the best conclusion will take you far in the world of Forex.

Do not forget that Forex is not a gambling establishment. Always do your research before making any trade.

In the same light, do not attempt to overcompensate for continued losses with a reckless stab at a trade. It may be advisable to take some time off to let your emotions settle down.

No matter how successful you get in Forex trading, keep a journal that documents all your failures and all your successes. Every time you make a great trade or a terrible trade, write down the result in your journal. When you have such a record to review, you will have a better grasp of your past forex efforts, a useful tool for planning future trading and hopefully, an all-around more profitable trading experience.

Create a plan. You will most likely fail without a trading plan. Sticking to a plan that you made in advance will stop you from making trades emotionally and illogically.

You will need to put stop loss orders in place to secure you investments. This is like insurance created for your trading account. If you fail to implement stop loss orders, you run the risk of losing a pretty penny. You can protect your capital with stop loss orders.

Stay away from using uncommon currency pairs to complete your trades. When you trade with the main currency pairs, you can buy and sell very quickly, because many people are trading on the same market. By contrast, it is more difficult to find a trader who wants your rare pairs when you want to sell them.

Research your broker when using a managed account. Brokers who have been in the business for longer than five years and performs in parallel with the market, are the mainstays to success in trading.

Again, any trader new to the forex market can gain useful information and knowledge by learning from experienced traders. If you are thinking about Forex trading, this article has some valuable advice for you. For traders who are willing to work hard and follow good advice, the opportunities are endless.

FHA Streamline Refinance Question - Zillow Mortgage Advice

An streamline FHA would not be your best option unless qualifying for a new loan is an issue. Based on value vs loan balance, you have 20 % equity and could avoid paying .55 mortgage insurance monthly for another 5 yrs min. as required on an FHA streamline refinance. Also, your savings will be about $175 a month with out MI so not sure why only $85 a month savings was mentioned.. If that is a 15 yr quote at 3.875%, you can do better.
If you want a better option to consider, do a 15 yr conventional loan in the 3% range and payment would be same or slightly lower than current payment. You would have about $300 monthly equity vs $125 or so currently, and knock 15 yrs off the loan term vs new 30 yr loan.........
Post a request on Zillow above left Mortgage Rates and you should get multiple quotes to consider.

UCF Leader in Criminal Law to Facilitate Sanford's Blue Ribbon Panel

Less than a year after taking the helm of the University of Central Florida?s Department of Legal Studies Center for Law and Policy, Cynthia Schmidt has been asked to facilitate a blue ribbon panel aimed at establishing trust and communication between Sanford Police and its community.?

Sanford created a Police Community Relations Blue Ribbon Panel with members from a wide cross section of the community. The group is charged with making recommendations for: strengthening the relationships between police and the community based on trust, inclusion and respect; promoting and practicing effective communication that crosses racial, cultural and ethnic barriers; and creating a shared vision and commitment to community policing and crime prevention.

?City officials asked long-time attorney Schmidt to facilitate the meetings with the 25-member panel over the next five to six months. The group is expected to meet twice a month until it finishes its work.?

?The blue ribbon panel will be doing important work and I?m honored to assist,? said Schmidt, director of the center. ?When the center was created, the focus was designed to be broad so it could react to the needs of the community. This is the kind of work we hoped to be a part of in our community.???

The center aims to develop, share and promote innovative ideas that advance the legal field and benefit the broader community while also providing public service to the community through partnerships.??

Schmidt, who graduated with a degree in legal studies from UCF in 1987, earned her law degree from the University of Florida?s Levin College of Law in 1990. She served as an assistant public defender in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court for 10 years and was recognized for her excellence with the Franklin Graham Award. She also had a private practice for years handling a variety of cases from misdemeanors to complicated sex crime cases and federal drug cases. In 2005 she was elected president of the Central Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.??

In 2005, she began teaching at Boone High School in Orlando and later as an adjunct at UCF. The American Lawyers Auxiliary gave her second place in the 2010 national High School Related Education Teacher of the Year award.?

In 2012, after an extensive national search, Schmidt was selected as the founding director of the Center for Law and Policy.?

Throughout her entire career she?s continued to be active in several associations including the Orange County Bar Association and the Legal Aid Society.?In April, the association recognized her community service with the Liberty Bell award.??

?We are honored that Dr. Schmidt has been asked to assume this important role,? said Michael Frumkin, dean of the College of Health and Public Affairs, which houses the center. ?Her skills at mediation, built on her long experience in building positive community relationships, make her ideal for this task of community healing in Sanford.?
